Colorado or Silverado 1500? Finding the Chevy Pickup That Fits Your Life
Park two Chevy pickups next to each other, and both look ready for work. One is the midsize Colorado. The other is the full-size Silverado 1500. They share a bowtie and plenty of the same tech, but they solve different problems. Picking the right one starts with an honest look at what you tow, where you park, and how you’ll use the bed.
- Every Colorado runs a 2.7L TurboMax engine with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, while the Silverado 1500 offers four engine choices, including a Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel.
- Chevrolet lists a minimum towing rating of 8,700 pounds for the Silverado 1500, which tops the Colorado’s 7,700-pound maximum.
- The Colorado measures 84.4 inches wide with mirrors, compared with 97.5 inches for the Silverado 1500.
How Much Truck Fits Your Driveway?
Size is the first thing you’ll notice. Chevy lists the Colorado at 214 inches long and 84.4 inches wide, mirrors included. The Silverado 1500 runs from 211 to 242 inches long depending on cab and bed, and it spans 97.5 inches across the mirrors. That’s over a foot of extra width, and you’ll feel it in a tight parking garage or a skinny alley.
Weight tells a similar story at the heavy end. An unloaded Colorado weighs between 4,340 and 5,260 pounds, while a Silverado 1500 ranges from 4,410 to 5,710 pounds.
Cab choices split here, too. Every Colorado is a crew cab with four doors. Silverado shoppers can pick a Regular Cab, Double Cab, or Crew Cab, which gives contractors more ways to set up a work truck.
Where the Chevrolet Colorado Shines
The Chevrolet Colorado keeps things simple under the hood. Each trim uses the same 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. Chevrolet rates that as the best standard torque in its class.
Towing tops out at 7,700 pounds with the available Trailering Package, and 4WD trucks also need the limited-slip differential to hit that number. A ZR2 is rated for 6,000 pounds. Check your trailer’s loaded weight against those numbers before you shop.
Off-road fans have lots to work with. Trail Boss models add a 2-inch factory lift and 32-inch all-terrain tires. The ZR2 steps up to a 3-inch lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and 33-inch mud-terrain tires. Want even more? Look at the ZR2 Bison, built with American Expedition Vehicles. It rides on 35-inch tires and offers 12.2 inches of ground clearance.
Inside, you’ll find an 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility, plus an 11-inch digital Driver Information Center. You’ll also pay less to get in the door, since the Colorado’s starting price sits below the Silverado’s.
What the Silverado 1500 Brings to Heavy Work
Walk past almost any central Indiana job site and you’ll probably spot a Silverado. Got a travel trailer or a loaded equipment hauler on your list? Then the Silverado 1500 deserves a hard look. Its four engines include the 2.7L TurboMax, two V8s, and the Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel. That diesel makes 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. Chevy says it’s the only diesel in its class and lists a best-in-class 28 mpg highway rating for it.
Towing starts at 8,700 pounds and climbs to 13,300 pounds on a Double Cab standard bed with the Duramax and 20-inch wheels. Payload reaches as high as 2,260 pounds. Out back, the Durabed holds 89.1 cubic feet of cargo and comes with 12 tie-downs rated at 500 pounds per corner.
Screen size depends on the trim you pick. A 13.4-inch touchscreen shows up on the LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2. High Country buyers can also add Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance for compatible roads, and it works while you’re towing.

Matching the Truck to Your Weekends
Go with the Colorado if your trailer sits well inside its ratings, you want a truck that’s easier to park, and you’d like to spend less up front. Trail Boss and ZR2 models also turn weekend trail runs into a blast.
Heavy towing, a diesel engine, or a Regular Cab work truck all point to the Silverado 1500, and so does wanting more cab and bed choices. Chevrolet notes that passengers, cargo, and options can lower how much a truck can tow, so leave yourself some room when you do the math.
